Poet Ahmed Faraz remembered

The fifth death anniversary of renowned poet Ahmed Faraz was observed on Sunday.

Ahmad Faraz was born in Kohat‚ Pakistan on 14th January 1931. He was considered one of the greatest modern Urdu poets of the last century.

Faraz is his pseudonym 'takhallus'‚ whereas his real name is Syed Ahmad Shah.

Outspoken about politics‚ he went into self-imposed exile during the Zia-ul-Haq era after he was arrested for reciting certain poems at a mushaira criticizing the military rule.

He stayed for 6 years in Britain‚ Canada and Europe before returning to Pakistan‚ where he was initially appointed Chairman Academy of Letters and later chairperson of the Islamabad-based National Book Foundation for several years.

He has been awarded with numerous national and international awards. He was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2004‚ in recognition of his literary achievements.

He returned the award in 2006 after becoming disenchanted with the government and its policies.

Ahmed Faraz‚ who has been compared with Faiz Ahmed Faiz‚ holds a unique position as one of the best poets of current times‚ with a fine but simple style of writing. Even common people can easily understand.

Ethnically a Hindko speaking Pashtoon‚ Ahmed Faraz studied Persian and Urdu at the Peshawar University. He later became lecturer at the Peshawar University.

Ahmed Faraz died in Islamabad on August 25‚ 2008.

Police claimed to have arrested two terrorists and recovered explosives and other items used in bomb making during an operation in Doaba area of Hangu on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, police besieged a house in Sarkikhel area of Doaba near the border of Orakzai Agency and asked the terrorist, hiding there, to surrender. But the terrorists opened firing on the police party. After exchange of fire for an hour, the terrorists surrendered, police said. They said that more than three kilograms of explosives, detonators, 13 meter detonating cord, two remote controls, two batteries and a wire cutter were recovered from the house.

The tribesmen of Orakzai Agency kidnapped eight people from Ublan Afghan refugee camp of Kohat for trespassing on their area on Wednesday.
Police said that the kidnapped persons had entered the area of Bezote tribe of Orakzai Agency to collect stones for construction of houses. Four of the kidnapped men were identified as Basharullah, Qismatullah, Sawab Khan and Raeed Khan. The names of remaining four men could not be ascertained.
The Bezote tribe had banned entry of shepherds and labourers for taking soil, stones and wood from their area. The eight men, who had a tractor trolley with them, were collecting stones when the tribesmen took them away. The tractor was found abandoned.
The dispute between the people of Kohat and Bezote tribe over the land erupted in 1971 when the Orakzai Agency was established. Both sides used to kidnap each other’s men.
The administration intervened in the past to avoid clashes between them but many firing incidents have occurred in the area regardless. The residents of Muhammadzai area of Kohat, who had suffered a lot in the dispute, have been demanding demarcation of the boundary and expulsion of Bezote tribe from the disputed land in Kohat.

Kohat Commissioner Jalalud Din has asked the officials to follow the new guidelines issued by the provincial government about transparency in development projects.
He was chairing a meeting in his office here on Wednesday that was attended by deputy commissioners of Kohat, Karak and Hangu besides heads of line departments.
The commissioner said that strict legal and departmental action would be taken against anyone, found involved in corruption. He said traditional relationship between the officials and contractors as it resulted in construction of substandard roads and buildings.The commissioner stressed the need for timely completion of projects to save time and money of the government.
Meanwhile, Kohat Assistant Commissioner Sajjad Khan was attacked when he was demarcating land in Gandiali area for construction of a degree college on Wednesday.
He was accompanied by contractor and revenue staff when the incident occurred. The people, who fired at him, first tried to stop the demarcation process by saying that the land allotted for the college was disputed.
The people opened firing on the survey team when it did not listen to them and started demarcating land for the college. However, the survey team managed to escape unhurt.
Police launched a search operation in the area after the incident to arrest the accused.

PESCO disconnects power supply of defaulters, recovers pending dues

The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO)'s Disconnection and Recovery Teams have disconnected power supply of several defaulters' consumers for non-payment of outstanding amount and arrears in Nowshera cantonment division and recovered pending dues from different circles.
According to PESCO spokesman here Friday, the recovery campaign was in full swing through out the province and Rs 200,000 have been recovered from defaulters in Nowshera cantonment division. Similarly, Rs 17 lac from 30 defaulters have been recovered from Kohat division while a cases were sent to the concerned police stations for lodging FIRs against 37 consumers involved in power theft.
Similarly, the Disconnection Teams of Mathani sub division have recovered Rs 1.5 lac from defaulters while power supply of consumers was disconnected from 100 KVA transformer on charges of using direct hooks and power stealing.
In Kohat Division from 26 defaulter consumers Rs 18 lac have been recovered while power supply of several consumers were disconnected from three distribution transformers due to non payment of Rs 3 lac outstanding dues.
Also, power supply was disconnected of the 73 defaulters of 11 kv Achini feeder from three 200 KVA distribution transformers due to non payment of dues of Rs 8 lac. The recovery teams in Hangu have also recovered 3 lac rupees from 78 defaulter consumers and expended circle of recovery.
The defaulters have been strongly warned to deposit their dues at earliest, otherwise their electricity will not be restored and strict legal action would be taken against them.

Kohat UET students stand firm for future

Students of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Kohat Campus continued their protest on the third consecutive day Friday against the university administration here outside the Peshawar High Court building.
The protesting students holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans against the indifferent attitude of university administration. They also raised slogans against the authorities concerned and held a set-in in front of the apex court building.
The protesting students were of the view that they were taught complete courses of Electrical Communication Engineering but now they were compelled to study extra course. They said that they were taught complete seven courses as per the university syllabus and two semesters exams were also taken from them.
 The students termed it injustice and a joke with the future of students because of the incompetence of the administration.
