Illegal gas connections in Karak, Kohat to be regularised

Source The News

The federal and provincial governments and the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines limited (SNGPL) are to regularize thousands of illegal gas connections in Karak and Kohat to avoid any mishap and preserve around 1000 MMCF of gas that is being misused.

The project is to cost around Rs5 to 6 billion. The provincial government authorities have agreed during a meeting with the Managing Director SNGPL Arif Hameed that the rubber pipes will be replaced to avoid any untoward incident, officials told The News.

The officials said around 7000 legal and 40,000 illegal connections alone in Karak use 1000 MMCF gas. “The total consumption of all the legal and illegal consumers is only 220 MMCF. The rest of the gas is wasted due to leaked pipes and illegal connections,” said the officials.

The officials said the SNGPL is bearing the losses of the theft and misuse of gas since it is paying the entire amount to the OGDCL and MOL at the time of purchase. “We had requested the government to help SNGPL regularize these connections,” said the officials.
