The general officer commanding of IX division of army distributed cash compensation and gift packs among the 64 victims of Police Colony car bomb blast here on Tuesday.
Speaking at a ceremony, GOC Maj-Gen Rizwan Akhtar said that it was the collective responsibility of law-enforcement agencies and people to bring the war against terrorism to its logical end.
He said, “The government and law-enforcement agencies are fighting a war against a common enemy who had no religion and principles and after facing successive defeats in Swat, Malakand and other areas the cowards have now started targeting women and children.”
The GOC expressed his grief over the loss of precious lives in the car bomb attack at the Police Colony in Kohat and assured the survivors that the security forces and the government was standing with them in these difficult times.
He rejected the impression that the blast was the result of a security lapse by police because they were at the forefront in the war and bearing the major brunt.
On this occasion, Kohat region DIG police Muhammad Masood Afridi said that they would maintain the writ of the government at any cost.
The GOC gave Rs100,000 each to 21 heirs of the victims who lost their lives in the tragic incident. He also gave gift packs to 43 policemen whose quarters were destroyed in the terrorist attack.

Seven people die in suicide car blast in Kohat

KOHAT: At least seven people were killed and 26 wounded in a suicide car bomb attack in the northwestern Pakistani city of Kohat on Sunday, police said.
"It was a suicide attack, the target was a police station," Dilawar Khan Bangash, city police chief, said while talking to a French news agency.
"The bomber exploded his vehicle on the back side of the police station.
"Seven people have been killed and 26 were injured in this car suicide attack," Abdullah Jan, the district's top police officer told reporters.
"These incidents are a reaction to the military operation in the tribal areas."
Another senior police officer confirmed the attack, adding that around 200 kilograms of explosives were used.
The attack comes just a day after two suicide bombers dressed in burqas struck a crowd of displaced people collecting aid handouts, killing at least 41 and wounding more than 60 at a nearby camp.
The bombers struck minutes apart on Saturday in the Kacha Pukha camp on the outskirts of the garrison city of Kohat, a registration centre for people fleeing Taliban violence and Pakistani army operations close to the Afghan border.

Militants’ bomb kills ex-minister in Hangu

Former provincial irrigation minister Ghani-ur-Rehman and his cousin were killed when an improvised explosive device, believed to have been planted by militants, went off on the Bagato road in Hangu district on Sunday.
Mashkoor, the former minister’s cousin died on the spot. Mr Rehman died while he was being taken to hospital.
Two personnel of the Frontier Constabulary, Mohammad Shah and Jan Mohammad, who were accompanying the former minister in his vehicle, were injured in the attack carried out by a remote-control device.
One of them was taken to Islamabad and the other to the Kohat CMH with bone and head injuries.
Initial investigations revealed that the terrorists had planted 50kgs of explosives under a small bridge on the road frequently used by Mr Rehman.
Rescuers used metal cutters to pull out the dead and the injured from the mangled remains of the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said the blast was so powerful that the vehicle was thrown in the air and it landed in a nearby field. The explosion created an eight feet wide and nine feet deep crater.
Kohat DIG Abdullah Khan said it was a clear case of target killing. He said that a five-member police team headed by an SP had been formed to trace the culprits.
A team from Peshawar will come here on Monday to collect evidence and investigate the case.
He said that Mr Rehman had been provided VVIP security because of the threats he faced.

Action against criminals in Karak from today

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Kohat range, Abdullah Khan Thursday said the police would launch an operation against anti-social elements in Takht-e-Nusrati tehsil from today (Friday).
Addressing an open ‘katchery’ at Takht-e-Nusrati Police Station, he said that reconciliation committees, comprising non-political people, would be formed at police station level to resolve various public issues. He asked the area elders, who were present on the occasion, to keep an eye on activities of prayer leaders, especially those hailing from Afghanistan.
Abdullah announced provision of two armoured personnel carriers and two other vehicles for Karak police, saying that the provincial government had approved creation of 5,000 vacancies in the Police Department and Karak district would be given enough share in the vacancies to resolve the problem of police shortage. He added that more police checkpoints would be set up in the district

Schools in Kohat reopen on Nov 2

The commissioner, Kohat division, has ordered that all universities and educational institutions in the region including tribal areas would reopen from Nov 2.
He said that a 19-point security plan had already been enforced collectively by the government and the administrations of the educational institutions in the respective districts.
Addressing a high-level meeting at his office on Friday the Commissioner, Khalid Khan Umerzai listened to the proposals of the Peace Committee and representatives of the educational institutions. He directed the executive district officers, education, and the school/college managements to adopt a fool proof plan for the security of the children and the teachers.
The meeting was attended by DIG, Kohat region, Abdullah Khan, District Police Officer, Kohat, Dilawar Khan Bangash, District Coordination Officer, Kifayatullah Khan, District Coordination Officer, Karak, Mohammad Ajmal, all the executive district officers, education, members of the teachers’ association, peace committee members, and representatives of schools, colleges and universities attended the meeting.

Over 100 held, arms seized in Kohat swoop

More than 100 suspected militants including 56 illegally staying foreigners were arrested in an operation conducted by the police and Frontier Constabulary in Kohat region on Sunday.
The operation which was largely carried out in parts of the Kohat and Hangu districts along the Orakzai Agency and Frontier Region of Kohat besides the congested city areas, was aimed at wiping out suspected militants.
The DIG, Kohat region, Abdullah Jan said that they were concentrating on the border areas of Hangu and Kohat to plug the unfrequented routes which were used by militants to enter Punjab.
He informed that huge quantity of lethal weapons was also seized from suspects who were being interrogated by a special team.
The police commandoes and FC personnel took part in the clean up operation in which Armoured Personnel Carriers and heavy machine guns were used in the B areas.
Mr Jan said that the operation had become indispensable in the present situation when the terrorists and kidnappers had let loose reign of terror in the region.
The operation was conducted in the light of the information given to police by the intelligence agencies in all the refugee camps in the region.
The seizure included 10 Kalashnikovs, 3 12-bore repeaters, 7 rifles, 15 pistols, 6 shot guns, 800 cartridges of different bores and 18 chargers.

33 killed, 60 hurt in Kohat suicide attack

Thirty-three people were killed and 60 others sustained injuries in a suicide car bombing in Katcha Pakha bazaar near here on Friday for which a little-known sectarian militant organisation, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al-Almi, claimed responsibility.
The explosion also brought down a two-storey hotel and about 25 nearby shops besides partially damaging other properties. The bomb went off at the busy intersection in Katcha Pakha bazaar in Astarzai union council area on the main Kohat-Hangu Road. The suicide bomber blew his double-cabin up at 10:00am when the small bazaar was thronged by shoppers.
It killed 33 people, majority of whom were buried under the debris of the hotel and shops that collapsed due to the impact of the explosion. Eyewitnesses said that human limbs were lying scattered at the place of the occurrence and some of the bodies were mutilated beyond recognition. They said besides the two-storey hotel, 25 shops razed to the ground and about 16 vehicles were destroyed. The blast caused an eight-foot deep and 12-foot wide crater on the roadside.
Maulana Rauf, chief of the shadowy Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al-Almi, said his organisation carried out the attack. He also warned of more attacks in future. It is believed that the group is linked to the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi of Maulana Haq Nawaz.
The organisation has reportedly said that the attack was in revenge for the death of a prominent religious leader, Maulana Muhammad Amin, the chief of the Sunni Supreme Council and renowned religious scholar, who was killed when his house and Madrassa was bombed in Hangu in June.
NWFP Inspector General Police (IGP) Malik Naveed Khan told a private TV channel that the incident might be the reaction to the ongoing military operation against the militants in Hangu district and the bordering Orakzai tribal agency.
The Kohat police spokesman, Fazal Naeem, however, termed the incident part of the ongoing wave of militancy and said that a clean-up operation was already under way in the area. The residents of Astarzai waited long for machinery and rescue team to help lift the debris and pull bodies out of the rubble, but shovels could not reach the place till 5:00 pm. However, local people rescued some victims themselves.
The injured were rushed to the Kohat Development Authority (KDA), the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) and the Astarzai hospital. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Kohat Abdullah Khan and the district police officer (DPO) rushed to the site along with the bomb disposal squad and the Rescue 15 team. The police also recovered some body parts of the suicide bomber and sent them to the forensic laboratory in Peshawar for tests. The engine and some other parts of the double-cabin vehicle used in the suicide attack were taken into custody which may provide help in the investigation.
The bomb disposal squad said that 150 kgs of explosives were used in the blast. An enraged mob gathered at the site of the blast and pelted the police team with stones, damaging some of the police vehicles. However, Army personnel cordoned off the area and brought the situation under control.
The police officials said most of the bodies could not be identified because of the extent of the mutilations. Those identified were: Qayyum Ali, Zareen Khan, Iftikhar Hussain, Sher Muhammad Ishaq, Abdus Samad, Nihar Hussain, Dost Ali, Rahman Ali, Shakeel, Mujahid, Jameel and Saddat Ali. The injured included: Nazim Ali, Akram Ali, Arbab Ali, Sirat Ali, Said Muhammad, Taqi Hussain, Gul Hussain, Hamid Ali, Sharbat Khan, Gul Wali, Haider Hussain, Syed Inayat and Nushad Ali. The police also said that majority of the victims belonged to Katcha Pakha area.
Later, at the burial of one of the dead, Jameel, his rivals attacked the funeral and killed three members of his family in Boraka village. The cause of the incident was said to be old enmity. Meanwhile, NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti announced Rs 0.3 million, and Rs 100,000, respectively, for the deceased and injured.

12 militants arrested in Hangu, Kohat

Twelve militants belonging to Waziristan and Afghanistan were arrested along with huge cache of arms and ammunition during search operations in Hangu and Kohat districts, police said on Wednesday.
Quoting DIG Abdullah Khan, Kohat Police Media Cell said that a search operation was launched in the city area of Thall tehsil of Hangu district on a tip off that militants were hiding there.
During raids at different places, militants belonging to North and South Waziristan agencies and Khost province of Afghanistan were arrested, it added. The arrested militants were shifted to special investigation cell in Thall.
Police said that interrogation report was awaited on the basis of which arrest of more militants was expected. More than 29 security officials and seven policemen had been killed in suicide attacks and blasts at army convoys and police mobiles during the last two months in Hangu district.
Police also recovered heavy arms and ammunition from their possession.
Similarly, an operation was launched in Sumari area, in the south of Kohat. Several militants were arrested during the operation. The arrested militants were shifted to Kohat for further investigations.

Mortar shells seized, 4 held

KOHAT, June 28: Police seized a van laden with huge quantity of mortar shells and other ammunition and arrested four alleged terrorists near Ustarzai here on Sunday.
DIG Abdullah Khan informed journalists at a briefing that the terrorists were taking the mortars and ammunition from Orakzai Agency to Hangu district for sabotage activities. They were arrested as soon as they entered the limits of Kohat, he said and added that the four terrorists belonged to Hangu and Orakzai but their names could not be revealed till the completion of operation for the arrest of their accomplices.
He claimed that the rest of the gang members would be arrested by night.
“There is no doubt that all heavy arms and ammunition was coming from tribal areas into the settled areas due to the weakening writ of the government there. If the terrorism has to be uprooted simultaneous clean up operation in all the tribal areas is the only solution,” he said.
He added that for that purpose the powers of the political agent would have to be revived so that administration could take strict action against the tribesmen involved in abetting terrorism and arms smuggling from Afghanistan.
The seizure from the terrorists included 47 mortars with fuses, 66 boxes of explosives, 15 mortar cartridges, one Kalashnikov, one shotgun and one 30 bore pistol. The mortars and ammunition was Chinese and Iranian made.

Injured SHO of Thall Police Station died

Kohat: The SHO of the Thall police station, who was injured in an attack on a police mobile on June 12, died in the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar on Saturday.
SHO Yaqoob Khan was injured in the attack in the Mamokhwar area of the Hangu district. Four other policemen had died in the incident and seven injured.
Mr Yaqoob’s funeral prayer was offered at Police Lines in Kohat and then the body was sent to his hometown of Sabirabad in the Karak district for burial.
Kohat region DIG Mohammad Idrees Khan, DPO Dilwar Khan Bangash and other officers attended the funeral.

KOHAT: Three policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), were killed Monday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police van on Kohat-Rawalpindi Road.Sources said the police party of Shadipur police post was on a routine patrol when unknown gunmen opened fire on the van, killing ASI Ishaq and constables Nazeer and Azam. The culprits managed to escape from the scene.
Deputy Inspector General of police Muhammad Idrees Khan constituted a police party to chase after the culprits.Police cordoned off the surrounding area and an exchange of fire took place between the police and culprits but there was no report of casualty till filing of this report.

Missing DIG Kohat found

Kohat: The DIG of Kohat region, who went missing on Friday morning, was found after 17 hours in Abbottabad where he had gone to spend four days to relieve tension, police clarified on Saturday.
The DIG could be contacted at 2am. He told Dawn by telephone from Abbottabad that he realised that his mistake had led to a serious problem when he heard news about his kidnapping on TV channels. To a question, he said that he wanted to spend few days in seclusion to take some rest after hectic duty. He said that he had informed the NWFP IGP before going on leave.
The confusion was caused because the DIG had turned off both his mobile phones and did not inform his staff about the exact location of vacations.
The DIG, Mohammad Idrees Khan, left Kohat in morning on Friday and told his staff that he was going to his home in Mardan but instead he went to Abbottabad, sources said.
Police high-ups contacted all his relatives and friends in Peshawar and other parts of the province but they expressed ignorance about his whereabouts. This led the officers to believe that he had been kidnapped.

The DIG, who is said to be a bitter enemy of militants and criminals, had been warned in advance to keep a low profile because of militants’ threat.
According to the source, Idrees Khan had left his official residence in Kohat with a guard in the morning, but had not reached his home in Mardan till late into the night.
His family contacted the Kohat office, but they were told that he had left for home.
The source said that top officials of the provincial police and intelligence agencies had established contacts with his relatives and friends in Peshawar and other cities.
