Scores of people, including children and women, were admitted to different hospitals of Kohat division after being affected by conjunctivitis (an infectious eye disease) and other waterborne diseases here, doctors said on Tuesday.
They said that there were no arrangements to drain out stagnant flood and rainwater of Kohat city and its adjoining areas, which had caused the outbreak of eye and water-borne diseases. They said that around 4,900 people were suffering from eye-related diseases while 3,100 affectees of waterborne disease had been admitted to different hospitals.
A child specialist at Children and Women Hospital Kohat Dr Mehar Ali said that conjunctivitis and other waterborne diseases had broken out after the recent floods. He said they were receiving 150 to 200 children affected by such disease on a daily basis. An eye specialist at District Headquarters Hospital Dr Irfanullah said that conjunctivitis had spread very rapidly in the area.

Khushalgarh Bridge reopens

The authorities have reopened Khushalgarh Bridge, which connects Kohat with Rawalpindi, for light traffic and train service.
The decision to reopen the bridge was taken after the Railways Division and National Highway Authority gave clearance that it was safe for traffic after level of floodwater receded considerably.
The bridge was closed for all kinds of traffic two days ago for the second time during the last fortnight due to threat by heavy floods in the Indus River.

Fresh rain in Kohat more deaths

Two women and two girls of the same family were killed and two others injured when roof of their house caved in due to heavy rains in Jabbi area of Kohat.
Rabela Jan, Nirma Jan, Nazia, 5, and Shehla, 3, were admitted to a local hospital but they died of injuries, hospital sources told Dawn.
Two women of the same family, Maqsooda and Saira, who were injured when their house collapsed, were admitted in the KDA divisional headquarter hospital.
The rescuers pulled out a body from flood waters in Thall Behzadi area. The dead was identified as Muhammad Saeed, resident of Azghun Banda village in Shahpur Town.
Floods washed away two children destroyed dozens of houses and a mosque completely in Katakanri area of Hangu district.
A minor girl, Laiba, and a seven-years-old boy, Saad, were killed when roof of a house fell in Shawa area on Hangu-Thall road in the small hours of Saturday. A new bridge constructed at a cost of Rs30 million recently in Mandoori area in Thall tehsil of Hangu District was badly damaged, a local elder Maulana Jalil told this correspondent.
He further said that the floodwater inundated Hangu courts, post office and a hospital. The floodwaters washed away a Hiace wagon in Kharshu Banda. The driver of the wagon managed to jump out of the vehicle safely. There was four feet deep water standing inside these government buildings which destroyed all furniture and electronic gadgets, he said. Maulana Jalil complained that despite widespread devastation caused by floods in the district, no public representative or official were seen in the affected areas where people were crying for help.
The flash floods caused by incessant rains in the whole Kohat District affected Mohammedzai, Nasrat Khel, Hafizabad, Jungle Khel, Jarma, and Kaghazai. The rains started around 6pm on Friday and continued till Saturday evening.
The district coordination officer declared emergency in Kaghzai, Nasrat Khel and Jarma after receiving reports that a 45,000 cusecs of water would pass through the narrow Kohat Toi nullah, two kilometers from the Kohat city. Last week 50,000 cusecs of water passed through the same stream which claimed 13 lives when a bridge fell on the people in Jarma.

Floods killed 22, 2500 houses washed away

According to initial survey the recent rains and flood in Kohat Division causes death of 22 people and about 2500 houses were washed away. The situation in kohat refugee camps is deteriorating and the risk of epidemic is increasing due to mismanagement and unhygienic foods availability in the Division. According the weather report the new rain system has entered in Kohat Division and it is causing further rains in different localities of Kohat areas which may casue further loss.

The Jarma Bridge was collapsed so far bodies of 12 people were recovered from the debris and more are expected. At least 39 people were killed in flash floods during the last 48 hours and count will go up according to Commissioner Kohat Muhammad Khalid Khan Umarzai. Three Colleges and School were vacated for affected people of Flood and relief camps are also erected at other location where free food is provided to the people.
