Kohat: 4 dead, 3 injured as unidentified gunmen open fire at car

KOHAT (Dunya News) – Four people died whereas three were injured after unidentified gunmen open fire at a car in Kohat on Saturday, reported Dunya News.

Shakardara Nazim rural village council Munir Khan was travelling in his car along with his relatives towards his residence when unidentified gunmen opened fire at the car near Shakardara resulting in the deaths of Nazim Munir Khan, Attiq Rehman and his two sons, Shafiq and Rafiq.

Three people, including a lady and a young girl, got injured as a result of the incident. Police stated that the incident was the outcome of personal rivalry, adding that further investigation of the incident was being carried out.

PESHAWAR: In yet another apparent target killing incident, unidentified assailants gunned down a senior officer of the Pakistan Army at a mosque near Hayatabad at the time of Friday prayers.

The family members of the deceased told The News that armed men waiting in ambush opened fire on Lieutenant Colonel Tariq Ghafoor at a small mosque near the Ring Road leading to Hayatabad.

“Those accompanying him told the police that they went to the mosque in a car. They said they entered the mosque while Lt Col Tariq was parking the vehicle when they heard three shots,” Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mubarak Zeb told The News.

As the relatives and other people came out of the mosque after hearing the gunshots, they found the colonel critically wounded. He succumbed to his injuries on way to the Hayatabad Medical Complex. His body was sent for an autopsy to the Combined Military Hospital and later to the Khyber Medical College.

Lt Col Tariq Ghafoor belonged to Kohat but was living in the family’s bungalow in Hayatabad. The family owned a gas station on the Ring Road near the place where he was shot dead.

The deceased was the elder son of the late Major General Fazal Ghafoor, who had served as the inspector general of the Frontier Corps in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata. The general had led the Frontier Corps to put down the armed uprising by the black-turbaned followers of the Tanzim Nifiaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) head Maulana Sufi Muhammad in Swat and the rest of Malakand Division in 1995. He was the son-in-law of Mian Mehboob and brother-in-law of Mian Saeed Ahmed.

Lt Col Tariq Ghafoor’s younger brother Asad and a sister are also serving as officers in the army. “He was a thorough gentleman and a friend indeed. He will be missed forever,” said one of his close friends, Muhammad Saeed. Lt Col Tariq is survived by his widow, a son and three daughters. His funeral prayer will be offered in Chambai village near the Kohat prison at 2pm today (Sunday).

Our Kohat correspondent adds: The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the killing of Lt Col Tariq Ghafoor. Its spokesman Muhammad Khurasani called reporters to make the claim and to assert that he was on their hit-list due to his role in taking action against the Taliban in Quetta. He added that the TTP’s special task force was tasked to carry out the attack.

Petty dispute: Three men gunned down

KOHAT: Three men were allegedly killed over a petty dispute in Jungle Khel on Sunday. A police spokesperson told the media the accused Yousaf Khan, Qasim, Asim and Wahid Khan are members of a group. They barged into the hujra of Muhammad Suleman and opened fire on Suleman, Muhammad Hassan and Habib. The accused managed to escape the scene after committing the crime. However, police registered an FIR and started investigation to find the culprits. Rafiullah, cousin of the deceased, told the police the two groups had a petty dispute a few days ago.

A 49-year-old man was found dead near Khan Market in Tirah Bazaar of Kohat city on Tuesday.

According to SHO Iqbal Mohmand, Khaista Khan filed an FIR stating his cousin Rab Nawaz left home on Monday and had been missing since then. Khan added the family could not find Nawaz anywhere and came to know later that his body had been found.

The deceased’s relative said Nawaz had a property business in the city and had no personal rivalries.

In a separate incident, a man who had been just released from prison was gunned down near Muslimabad. An official of Jarma police station said Umair Khan filed an FIR stating his brother Taj Mir was released from Kohat Jail on Tuesday and they were later heading home when their rival Ashrafuddin opened fire at them near Shangrila Hotel.

Mir died on the spot while the accused managed to escape. According to Umair, Ashraf suspected Mir of shooting his brother a year ago which is why he attacked him.

Professor kills wife in Kohat

A professor at the Garrison Cadet College Kohat allegedly shot dead his wife over a minor issue here on Thursday, sources said. The sources said that Prof Mian Amjad Hayat exchanged harsh words with his wife and shot her dead at Iftar. The accused managed to escape from the scene after committing the crime. His daughter, Hajira Gul, lodged the case against her father at the Muhammad Riaz Shaheed Police Station.

Four persons, including a passer-by, were killed and two others sustained injuries when two rival groups exchanged gunfire in Jangalkhel area on Tuesday, sources said. The sources said that Shinwari and Mansoorkhel opened fire on each other after an exchange of harsh words. Four persons including Nobat Khan, Riaz, Sajid and a passer-by, stated to be an Afghan national, were killed on the spot while two persons were injured in the clash. The dead and injured were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital.

A man committed suicide after killing two of his daughters and injuring three other family members – who also later died – in Garhi Mawaz Khan area on Monday.

City police official Jahangir Khan said he was informed about a shooting incident in Hafizabad Mohallah at around 1:40pm, adding he rushed to the spot and found out Wali Muhammad had opened fire at his family members, killing six-year-old daughter Qandila and five-year-old Safina on the spot. Eight-year-old Sadaf, 10-year-old son Ali and his wife Noorzadi were seriously injured before Wali turned the gun on himself.

Khan said he visited Noorzadi at the hospital where she told the police her husband was mentally unstable. She added Wali barged inside the house and opened fire at the family members for no apparent reason. “I saw Wali kill himself also,” she said.

Later in the evening, Sadaf, Ali and Noorzadi succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. According to the doctors, Noorzadi was in critical condition and was being shifted to Lady Reading Hospital but died on the way, said Khan.

He added initial investigation revealed Wali had psychological problems and was suffering from bouts of depression since the past one week. While Khan speculated the incident might be related to poverty, the exact motive of the killings is yet to be ascertained.

A woman was killed over children dispute in Shakardar on Friday. Peyaw Badsha, husband of the deceased, lodged report with police and said that he was present in his house along with his family when the murderers Sajid and Shezan entered in house and opened fire, resultantly, his wife received severe injuries and she succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital.

Armed men shot dead a former army subedar in Wuch bazaar area of restive Hangu district the other day, eyewitnesses and police said.

The city police said the victim was identified as Malik Hadi and that his attackers escaped the scene.

Police started efforts to arrest the killers after registering a case.

They said it was yet not yet known whether an enmity claimed his life or militants had attacked him.

Six-year-old child shot dead in Kohat

Reportedly, Gulzar Khan S/o Mir Afazal resident of Surgul while lodging F.I.R in the Police Station Jerma told that he along with his son Shahzad 6 were en route home,"when we reached near Abu Bakar Masjid, Mr. Abid Mehmood alias Qamar S/O Gul Janan and Tariq Mehmood S/O Ahmad Shah opened fire on us due to which my son shahzad received bullet injuries and died on the spot" 
He added the reason behind the incident was told to be old enmity. 
Police lodged FIR and started investigation of the case.

C&W accountant shot dead in Kohat

Unidentified gunmen shot dead an accountant of the Communication and Works (C&W) Department near Kohat University on Monday.Sources said Shah Adam Khan, resident of Sabirabad in Karak district, along with his family members was on way to Peshawar when he was intercepted by armed men in Kohat.They sprayed him with bullets, leaving him dead on the spot.The slain person was accountant in the C&W Department in Mansehra district, the sources said.

A man belonging to a Shia family was gunned down by unidentified people in Safar, on the border of Lower Orakzai Agency and Kohat district, on Sunday. It is not clear whether the attack was a case of sectarian violence.

An official of the Usterzai police, Kohat, told The Express Tribune that deceased Gul Hussain was a resident of Marai Bala. The police said Hussain was on his way to Kohat when unidentified assailants ambushed him around 7am.

“They opened fire and killed him on the spot,” the official added.

The cousin of the deceased, Samin Haider filed a case stating the family did not have any personal enmity and blamed the incident on sectarianism.

After the incident, residents blocked GT Road near Kacha Pakha, Kohat district for more than 30 minutes. However, the police rushed to the site, dispersed the protesters so the road would be clear for the government officials who were passing through

A retired army officer was shot dead over a property dispute in Ustarzai area on Sunday, police sources said.They said that Captain (retd) Ali Muhammad Bangash was on his way home from the market when gunmen opened fire on him, leaving him dead on the spot.The police registered the case against the accused Mazhar Ali, Riaz Ali and Zulfiqar Ali and arrested one of the accused Riaz Ali while efforts were on to nab other accused.

Two persons were killed and four seriously wounded in different incidents in Kohat on Monday.
Unidentified gunmen killed Syeed Ali Shah in Kachee. The deceased died on the spot after he was shot down. 
In another incident, also, unidentified armed persons shot one Meer Badshah who was going home from his place of duty . He was taken to nearby hospital but he succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased's bother lodged FIR in Jarmany Police Station. 
In yet another incident three brothers Mohamman Tafeel, Rahat ul Allah and Tariq were accused of shooting Mohammad Furqaan injuring him seriously. 

Tribal Elder shot in FR Kohat

A tribal elder was shot dead by unidentified person in Jawakai area of Frontier Region (FR) Kohat on Saturday, sources said.

The sources said that unidentified persons attacked the house of the tribal elder identified as Ilyas Khan in Sangerkhel village and shot him dead. The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained.

Gunned down: Bullet-riddled body found in Kohat

The bullet-riddled body of a man was found in the Sheikhan area of Kohat on Tuesday, according to the police. Syed Qaiser Abedin had been missing since Monday evening, Riaz Shaheed police station SHO Aqiq Hussain told The Express Tribune. He said locals informed them about a body lying by the roadside after which they rushed to the site and shifted the deceased to the police station. “The assailants had killed him and wrapped his body in a sheet,” the SHO added. The national ID card of Hussain was found near the body, helping them identify his name and hometown, Usterzai Payan. Police later shifted the body to Kohat Divisional Hospital for autopsy following which it was handed over to the bereaved relatives, who said Hussain had no enmity with anyone. Police have started investigation.

A man was killed his brother over a domestic dispute in the limits of Janglekhel Police Station on Tuesday, official sources said.Muhammad Hanif reported to the police that his brother Naveed Gul entered into the house of his brother Abdul Hafiz and opened fire on him, killing him on the spot.Taking promptly action, the police arrested the culprit with weapon.

Unknown gunmen killed a police guard of a private bank branch in Bilitang village here on Thursday.
Police officials said that as a result of the firing constable Salahuddin of Bilitang police station died on the spot. They said that a private guard of the bank and people there did not try to stop or fire at the fleeing killers, who were two in number.
Later, DIG Masood Afridi, DPO Mubarik Zeb and other officials reached the scene to record statements of eyewitnesses, who were reluctant to say anything about the incident. Most of the shopkeepers in the area shut their businesses to avoid police interrogation.
Later, the constable was buried in Chakarkot area. His funeral was attended by a number of police officers and officials besides a large number of local people.
The DIG has ordered immediate inquiry into the incident while the police arrested the bank’s private guard and some other suspicious people after the initial interrogation. The Bilitang police registered a case against the unknown killers and have launched investigation.

2 get life term for murder in Kohat

A man and his grandson were awarded life imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court in a murder case here on Tuesday.

The convicts Sharf Khan and his grandson, Haysiat Khan, residents of Kachai village, had hijacked a Suzuki van and later killed its driver, Qismat Ali.
The body of the driver was found in Khadar Khel area on November 7, 2010.
The deceased was killed on Hangu road and the killers threw his body miles away on the Bannu road.
The Lachi police had traced and arrested the culprits.
The judge of anti-terrorism court after hearing conclusive arguments from both the sides announced the verdict.
They were later shifted to the Kohat district prison from the court.

Governor KP escapes attempt on life

Terrorist’s attack on a police party, deployed for Governor Khyber Pukhtunkhwa’s security duty, moments before governor’s visit to Garrison College Kohat Monday morning resulted in Shahadat of two cops.

Reports reaching from Kohat said the governor KP Barrister Masood Kausar was scheduled to visit the Garrison College Kohat Monday morning and the security of the venue was being beefed up with the deployment of heavy contingents of Police.

In the meanwhile, as the police sources said, a police mobile squad was returning after dropping the contingents at the venue, when it was ambushed by the unknown terrorists near Kohat cement factory at Rawalpindi road with sophisticated weapons.

The assault on the Police van resulted in martyrdom of two Policemen on board the vehicle. The miscreants as the reports said managed to slip away from the scene after committing the crime.

Heavy contingents of the Police and others security forces rushed to the site of the attack and kicked off the search operation but their hunt remained abortive as nobody could be netted. It was also learnt that entire staff of a roadside hotel near the scene was also found missing when enforcers of law reached the spot.

The police force and the security forces in Kohat, native town of Governor Kausar, had been attacked by the militants several times in the past which resulted in killing of scores of men in uniform as well as civilians.
