Weapons seized, two held in Kohat

The police recovered a cache of weapons from a car and arrested two accused on Indus Highway here on Tuesday.

A police official said that the weapons were being taken from Darra Adamkhel to down country in a car, which had passed through at least four checkpoints in Kohat before reaching Lachi. The weapons recovered from the car (AC-435) included two Kalashnikovs, three sten guns, one repeater and 11 pistols besides 29 chargers and 800 cartridges.

They said that the accused Ahmed Sher of Gujrat and Meraj Mohammad of Chitral had been arrested. The Lachi police registered a case and presented the accused before a court, which sent them to Kohat prison.

Gang of smugglers busted in Kohat

Police here have busted a gang involved in smuggling of non-custom paid vehicles from tribal areas to settled areas of the country.
Officials said that the police were checking papers of vehicles at Jozara area at the Kohat-Hangu border when a Toyota Hiace was stopped for examination of its registration, which was found fake along with its number (LES-6582).
The police party arrested Umeriaz Khan and Mohammad Tayyab, residents of Mamshi area of Bannu district, who tried to flee but were intercepted after a little chase.
During interrogation, the accused said that they were being followed by the gang leader in a car, who returned back to Hangu after their arrest.
The police said that the accused revealed that they were in the business of bringing non-custom paid vehicles from tribal areas, bordering Afghanistan, preparing fake registration
papers and selling them to potential buyers in settled areas.
An intelligence officer confided to this correspondent that the tribesmen smuggled vehicles for personal use in Fata where they were exempted from tax. He said that a cartel also existed that smuggled such vehicles to other parts of the country with the connivance of customs staff and police.
He claimed that the charges for non-custom paid vehicle’s entry to Kohat varied at different checkposts. He said that there were three main police checkposts where the staff charged up to Rs8,000 per vehicle. He said that the smugglers who carried such vehicles to Punjab had been paying up to Rs200,000 on average at checkpost depending on model of the
vehicle.

Police arrested two drug-carriers including a woman and recovered narcotics from their possession here on Saturday. Sources said police officials were checking vehicles on the Indus Highway when they intercepted a passenger coach heading for Bannu from Darra Adamkhel. Upon search, 10 kilograms of hashish and 300 grams of opium were recovered from Ms Telidara and Umer Zaman, both residents of Bannu. Meanwhile, three persons sustained injuries in a firing incident at Mangal Baba area in Jangalkhel in Kohat. Sources said that one Saeed Khan opened fire after exchanging hot words with his father over some domestic issue. His brother Ihsanullah and passers-by Hamid and Muhammad Raees sustained bullet injuries. Police arrested the accused along with his Kalashnikov rifle.

Bid to smuggle artifacts foiled in Kohat

Customs officials here Monday recovered precious artifacts including sculptures from a Karachi-bound bus and arrested three persons.

Sources said the ancient objects from the Buddhist era were reported to be worth Rs35 billion in the international market. The artifacts included 37 sculptures, six figurines, two daggers, cups and a knife.

The officials said the relics were being transported to Karachi from where it were to be smuggled to Canada. The archeologists were summoned from Peshawar to estimate the cost of the recovered artifacts and sculptures.

They said the statues were more than 3,000 years old and belonged to the age of Buddha. The arrested smugglers were identified as Sher Ali, Khaista Khan and Faqir Muhammad. Due to lack of proper check and vigilance by the government authorities on the archaeological sites in the NWFP, illegal excavation has become a lucrative business.

Smuggling control through Checkpost

The authorities approved on Monday establishment of two police checkposts to control smuggling of sugar and flour to Afghanistan via tribal areas.

A meeting chaired by District Coordination Officer Siraj Ahmed decided that two police checkposts would be set up at Kaghazai and Sumari to control smuggling of sugar and flour to Afghanistan. The policemen deployed at the checkposts would be authorised to seize the commodities being smuggled to the neighbouring country.

The meeting discussed availability of essential food items at controlled rates in the bazaars and constituted three monitoring committees to stop smuggling and take action against hoarders and profiteers.

The DCO said that transportation of sugar and flour would not be checked at any other checkpost unless permitted by the higher authorities as the commodities were also being provided to Hangu and Orakzai Agency through the same routes.

He directed the officials to remain in touch with the management of Farooq Flour Mills, Javed Flour Mills and Zahid Flour Mills for the distribution of flour in the three constituencies of Kohat district.

The Kohat police foiled an attempt of smuggling huge quantity of hashish from tribal area to Karachi and arrested the carriers along with car near Zero Point on Saturday.

The police claimed that they had information that two inter-provincial smugglers would try to smuggle hashish from Darra Adamkhel, located in the Frontier Region of Kohat.

The Jarma police checkpost staff started checking vehicles at Zero Point on the Indus Highway. They stopped a car number LOG-2171 for checking and on search found more than 10kg of finest quality of hashish from its secret cavities.

The smugglers Raza Khan and Abdul Kahliq, residents of Takht-i-Nasrati, were shifted to investigation branch.

Kohat: The Kohat police foiled an attempt of smuggling a huge quantity of hashish from the tribal area to Karachi and arrested the carriers on the Indus Highway on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, police stopped a car at the new toll plaza on the highway and on search recovered 15 kilograms of fine quality hashish from its secret cavities. Police arrested the alleged smugglers, Sameenullah and Jibran Ali, residents of the Nowshera district.

KOHAT: Police foiled an arms smuggling bid and arrested seven smugglers during a ‘nakabandi’ on Indus Highway Thursday.

On a tip-off, police party headed by the SHO Attique Hussain established blockade on Indus Highway and flagged down two vehicles (ADQ-444 and JB-1686).

On thorough search, police recovered four Kalashnikovs, seven rifles, hundreds of cartridges and drugs, including 24 kilograms of hashish and three kilograms of heroin, besides arrest of seven smugglers identified as Amanullah, Attiqullah, Faqeer, Hazrat Wali, Tariq, Mansoor and Saadullah.

In another incident, police arrested three armed men identified as Amir Abbas, Gul Nawaz and Umar Zaman, residents of Janglekhel for harassing the people. Police recovered three pistols and 150 cartridges from their possession.

Kohat: The Janglekhel police foiled an attempt to smuggle weapons from Darra Adamkhel to Punjab and arrested a member of an inter-provincial gang of smugglers on the Indus Highway here on Wednesday.

Police said the SHO of the Janglekhel police station stopped a car on a tip-off and on searching its secret cavities recovered the weapons.
