District police officer Thursday placed three cops under suspension on the charges of negligence. A notification issued by DPO Delawar Khan Bangash stated that the Station House Officer (SHO) Gumbat Police Station Inspector Mirzali Khan, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Khushalgarh police post Nazeer Khan and Khushalgarh Bridge police post ASI Azmat Ali were suspended. They had been asked to report to the Police Lines. The notification read that Sub-Inspector Asad Zubair had been posted as SHO Gumbat Police Station, ASI Afzal Khan in-charge Khushalgarh police post and Head Constable Daud Khan in-charge of Khushalgarh Bridge police post.

Colonel among 6 troops killed in Orakzai blast

A lieutenant colonel of the Pakistan Army and five other soldiers were killed when a roadside time bomb exploded in Hangu district on Friday, official sources said. It was the third deadly attack on paramilitary troops patrolling the tribal belt this week.
A security forces’ convoy of eight personnel was on its way to the Thall town from Ghiljo area of Orakzai Agency when it was attacked by terrorists through a remote-controlled device in the Yakh Kandao area, killing a lieutenant colonel and five other soldiers. Two personnel were hurt in the explosion and soon air lifted to the Kohat CMH.
Hours later, gunship helicopters pounded three spots in Upper Orakzai and the neighbouring Kurram and killed 22 suspected terrorists, local government officials Aurangzeb Khan and Jamil Khan said. It was not immediately clear whether the airstrikes were in retaliation or not.
The bombings showed the fragility of the military’s gains in its offensives against al Qaeda and Taliban along the border with Afghanistan.

Kohat Indus Highway completely worn out

About 70 kilometer section of the Indus Highway linking Kohat with Karak has completely worn out causing numerous accidents and loss of precious lives.One lane of the highway is totally in a dilapidated condition and bumpy due to over-loaded trucks exceeding the weight limit fixed by the National Highway Authority (NHA).It may be mentioned that the highway, which is used by all types of vehicles, connects eastern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with commercial hub of the country Karachi.
Mohammad Yasin, owner of a transport company, said that the over-loaded trucks were mainly responsible for the damage to the highway.
“The NHA has not evolved an effective mechanism to check flow of over-loaded trucks on this important route,” he added.
A tribal elder of Khattak tribe in Karak said over 150 people have been killed during last five years due to accidents on this dangerous patch of the highway.
“ Local people have written several letters to the NHA urging it to take steps for its repair but in vain”, he said.
Residents of the district Karak also suffer difficulty in shifting sick people to hospitals in Kohat and Peshawar due to the broken highway.
On the other side, this bumpy road with ditches is damaging vehicles, especially their tyres. According to an NHA official, the Kohat-Karak highway is totally broken and there is a need to lay a completely new road.

Constable killed in Kohat

A police constable was killed in Chakarkot Bala by unidentified persons while 33 suspected militants were arrested during a search operation here on Saturday.
The police constable, Ibrar Hussain, serving as driver at Ustarzai police station was on leave and was walking out of his home when armed men sprayed him with bullets.
The local people said that he had an old enmity and was killed by his rivals.
Meanwhile, police arrested 33 suspected militants in various areas of the district and recovered weapons and hashish from them during an operation.
The operation was carried out in Jungle Khel, Ghulam Banda, Kharmato, Jarma Gumbat, Mian Garhi, Muhammadzai, Ustarzai and Merozai areas.
The seizure included four Kalashnikovs, three repeaters, eight shotguns, six rifles, 19 pistols, hundreds of cartridges and 12 kilograms fine quality hashish.
The suspects were handed over to the investigation department for interrogation after registration of cases against them in respective police stations.

Khusall Garh Bridge construction agreement

An agreement has been finalised between NHA, OGDC and MOL for the construction of bridge at Khuskhal Garh Kohat. According to details the agreement will be signed on 14th October.The agreement inter alia says that to transport the Oil and gas found in Karak and Sakirdara area to Attock refinery the Khashall Garh is the best route so it should be immediately built. The funding should be 50 percent financed by NHA while remaining 50 percent should be shared by OGDC and MOL equally. The brigde should be prepared in 27 months and work on it will be started in the mid of November 2010. The cost on the bridge is about 1.4 billion rupees.

Rs80m projects approved for Kohat

The district development committee (DDC) here on Thursday approved 75 development schemes worth Rs80.75 million.
District coordination officer Shahidullah Khan, chairing the DDC meeting, asked the officials that work on all projects would be allowed to start only after identification of land. He strictly directed the officials to visit sites of the projects for filing exact estimates and refrain from making desk PC-1 reports.
The meeting was attended by executive officer finance Wahidur Rehman Khattak, executive officer communication and works Kifayatullah, technical officer, planning and development Muhammad Ijaz and tehsil municipal officer Noor Daraz Khattak.
Mr Rehman told the meeting that five projects, costing Rs10 million, would be carried out in the constituency of Senator Abbas Afridi and two development schemes worth Rs10 million in the constituency of MNA Pir Dilawar Shah.
He said that 20 projects, costing Rs20 million, had been approved for the PF- 38 constituency of MPA Qalbe Hassan. The funds for these projects had been provided from Tameer-i-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Programme.
The DDC also approved 20 development projects in the PF-39 constituency of MPA Iqbal Din Fana.
The allocation of Rs2.85 million for three projects had been made from district annual development programme (DADP), 12 projects of Rs10 million from the Tameer-i-KP Programme and five projects of Rs10 million would be executed on the chief minister’s directives.
Mr. Rehman said that Rs2.85 million had been set aide from the DADP for six projects to be carried out in areas identified by MPA Musarat Shafi.
Meanwhile, speaking at a public meeting Senator Abbas Afridi promised that gas produced from local gas fields would be provided to all areas of the district without any discrimination.
He asked the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited to allocate funds for providing the facility in all the 32 union councils. He regretted that gas was provided to Punjab province from Kohat gas fields while local people were being ignored.

28 criminals arrested in Kohat

Twenty-eight criminals including four proclaimed offenders were arrested during raids in different areas here Wednesday, police sources said. The sources said the arrests were made in Chorliki, Khawajakhela, Ghurizai, Talkan and Gandyali areas, adding that weapons recovered from the arrested persons included five Kalashnikov rifles, seven rifles, two repeaters, six shotguns, 21 pistols and 1,875 bullets. Seven kilograms of hashish was also recovered during the raids, the sources added.Meanwhile, the police nabbed a drug-peddler Qadir Hussain in the jurisdiction of the Ustarzai Police Station. One Kalashnikov rifle, dozens of cartridges and two-and-a-half kilogram of hashish were also recovered from him.

Three children were injured in a grenade attack on a house in Jungle Khel here on Wednesday.
Police said that unidentified terrorists lobbed a hand-grenade on the house of one Mukammal Shah in Gulshanabad area of Jungle Khel. As a result, his grand children including, Muavia, Bushra and Aamna, were injured. They were admitted to the KDA divisional hospital.
Police have registered a case against unknown attackers on the complaint of Mr Shah.
Earlier in the day, Kohat police arrested 28 alleged criminals, including four proclaimed offenders, and recovered weapons during a search operation in various parts of the district.
Police also seized five kalashnikovs, seven rifles, two repeaters, six shotguns, 21 pistols and 1,875 cartridges. An alleged drug peddler, Ghudair Hussain was also arrested from Alizai.

Two smugglers nabbed in Kohat

Police arrested two drug-carriers including a woman and recovered narcotics from their possession here on Saturday. Sources said police officials were checking vehicles on the Indus Highway when they intercepted a passenger coach heading for Bannu from Darra Adamkhel. Upon search, 10 kilograms of hashish and 300 grams of opium were recovered from Ms Telidara and Umer Zaman, both residents of Bannu. Meanwhile, three persons sustained injuries in a firing incident at Mangal Baba area in Jangalkhel in Kohat. Sources said that one Saeed Khan opened fire after exchanging hot words with his father over some domestic issue. His brother Ihsanullah and passers-by Hamid and Muhammad Raees sustained bullet injuries. Police arrested the accused along with his Kalashnikov rifle.
